One of the main holidays during Svyatki was the New Year or Vasilyev evening, the eve of which fell on December 31/January 13. It was from Vasilyev evening that the "terrible" fortune-telling began - the most dangerous of all Christmas fortune-telling. One of the reasons for the danger of these fortune-telling is their timing to the most elemental period of Svyatki - the "terrible" evenings, when the old year ended and the new one began. The program includes Christmas games and amusements with mummers, fortune-telling for well-being in the new year and for a happy marriage.
