The XX International Freestyle Wrestling Tournament for the V.N. Semenov Cup will host wrestlers from more than 20 countries and 20 regions of Russia from February 18 to 22, 2026, in the Nefteyugansky District of the Khanty-Mansi Autonomous Okrug, in the urban settlement of Poikovsky. This tournament, with its long and successful history, will welcome the best wrestlers from around the world for the 20th time. The geography is impressive in its scale: athletes from 19 countries of the world will meet in Yugra. Wrestlers from India, Greece, Serbia, Hungary, Tunisia, Abkhazia, Azerbaijan, Armenia, Belarus, Bulgaria, Romania, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Cuba, Moldova, Mongolia, Turkmenistan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, and 20 regions of Russia, including the new territories of the Lugansk People's Republic and the Zaporizhzhia region, have already confirmed their participation. The purpose of the International Freestyle Wrestling Tournament for the V.N. Semenov Cup is to promote a healthy lifestyle, popularize, and advance the national school of wrestling. The main goal is fair and open competition, and the athletes should be treated equally.
Among the guests of the tournament are Olympic champions, international-level wrestlers, Honored Masters of Sports, and titled coaches. The first International Freestyle Wrestling Tournament for the Vladimir Semenov Cup was held in 2003. The first five tournaments had the status of an Open All-Russian Tournament. In 2008, the tournament was granted international status and officially included in the competition calendar of the Russian Ministry of Sports. Since 2024, the International Freestyle Wrestling Tournament has served as a qualifying stage for the Russian national team at the Ivan Yarygin Grand Prix International Tournament. In different years, athletes from neighboring and far-flung countries, including Azerbaijan, Armenia, Belarus, Georgia, Moldova, Estonia, Latvia, Kazakhstan, Ukraine, Tajikistan, Mongolia, Iran, Israel, Poland, Slovakia, Spain, Germany, the United States, Canada, Tunisia, and several other countries, participated in the Vladimir Semenov International Wrestling Tournament.
Olympic champions Alexander Karelin, Alexander Ivanitsky, and Mikhail Mamiashvili, as well as silver medalist Valeria Koblova and bronze medalist Sergey Kornilaev, visited the Nefteyugansk District as honored guests. In different years, the wrestling mats were competed on by Olympic champion Soslan Ramonov and Zaurbek Sidakov, Olympic silver medalist Soslan Tigiev; Olympic bronze medalist 2020 Artur Najfonov; world, European, and Russian champions and medalists Abdul Akhmedov, Azamat Tuskaev, Nurmagomed Gadzhiev, Alikhan Jabrailov, Ilyas Bekbulatov, Israil Kasumov, Alexander Bogomoev, Alan Gogaev, Alan Bagaev, Anzor Zakuev, and others.
Thanks to V.N. Semenov's efforts to promote wrestling among the younger generation, there are now dozens of wrestling sections in the Khanty-Mansiysk Autonomous Okrug, with over 4,500 students and approximately 60 highly qualified coaches. At the Tokyo Olympics, Yugra wrestlers Zaurbek Sidakov and Artur Najfonov won gold and bronze medals, respectively. The district's sports schools regularly receive assistance in acquiring wrestling mats and equipment.
