Komoeditsa is the time of year when cold and death give way to the sun and life. The festival is timed to coincide with the dates of the spring equinox, also known as the carrying out of Morena, the goddess of winter and death, among the Slavs.
Bears were called "koma", hence the tradition according to which the Slavs believed that if they brought fresh baked goods to the dens of sleeping bears, to appease the bears, they would wake up less angry and would not come in search of food to their villages and towns, and would be less dangerous. Hence the saying "the first pancake is for the Bears". Morena or Mara personifies everything that leaves after winter. According to custom, every villager made his own effigy, which was made of straw, threads and rags.
